A new chapter in Zimbabwe’s pageantry was written on Saturday, May 17, as 26-year-old Lyshanda Moyas from Gweru, the “City of Progress“, was crowned Miss Universe Zimbabwe 2025, taking over the reins from outgoing queen Sakhile Dube.
The glamorous finale, hosted at the iconic Harare Hippodrome, was graced by dignitaries including former First Lady Grace Mugabe, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife Madam Minnie Baloyi-Chiwenga, and several reigning and former pageant kings and queens.
While the event delivered moments of elegance and celebration, it wasn’t without its setbacks. Some fans experienced technical issues while attempting to stream the show online, prompting criticism on social media. Additionally, physical attendance was lower than expected, with some citing high ticket prices and travel distance from other cities as barriers.
One of the hot topics of the evening was the national costume segment. Many pageant enthusiasts noted that Zimbabwe still struggles to present distinct and culturally rich costumes on the international stage. Calls were made for local models to collaborate with heritage-inspired fashion brands such as Ivhu Tribe and The Tribe Called Zimbabwe to elevate the country’s pageant presence.
Still, the night had its highlights. Afro-dancehall star Nutty O delivered a powerful performance that got the audience moving, including former First Lady Grace Mugabe, who was seen dancing on the floor, and guest judge Connie Ferguson, who joined in with a sing-along.
The Q&A session brought tension and excitement, as audiences waited to see which finalist would impress with wit and grace. Ultimately, Lyshanda Moyas emerged victorious, claiming the coveted crown. Onesimo Nkomo was named first runner-up, while Rumbidzai Muzopa secured the second runner-up position.
Despite the mixed reviews, the night marked another milestone in celebrating Zimbabwean beauty, intelligence, and cultural pride.
