Miami, Florida — South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have crashed out of the FIFA Club World Cup after being held to a goalless draw by Brazil’s Fluminense on Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The result means the Pretoria-based side finished third in their group, missing out on a place in the knockout stages.
Despite dominating possession and creating several clear chances, Sundowns—nicknamed Bafana Ba Style, couldn’t find the breakthrough they desperately needed.
Lucas Ribeiro signaled Sundowns’ attacking intent early, testing the keeper with a strong effort from outside the box. Tashreeq Matthews and Divine Lunga also came close to opening the scoring, but were both denied by solid Fluminense defending and sharp goalkeeping.
In the second half, Sundowns came out pressing, earning an early corner and continuing to probe the Brazilian defence. Fluminense nearly stole the lead in the 58th minute, but their strike was denied by the woodwork. Later, Mosa Lebusa, coming off the bench, made a vital sliding tackle to keep the scores level.
Sundowns pushed for a late winner, but a last-gasp header from Fluminense’s defence thwarted their hopes. The final whistle confirmed a goalless stalemate and Sundowns’ early exit from the tournament.
Final score: Mamelodi Sundowns 0 – 0 Fluminense
Despite a spirited campaign, Masandawana’s Club World Cup journey ends at the group stage, with plenty of lessons and pride in their competitive display on the global stage.
