It’s the end of an era for South African television as SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions officially announce the curtain call for Muvhango, the groundbreaking Tshivenda-rooted soapie that has lit up local screens for nearly three decades.
After 28 years of bringing compelling drama, cultural heritage, and unforgettable characters into homes across the nation, Muvhango will air its final episode on 8 August 2025 at 21:00.
First broadcast on 7 April 1997, Muvhango was the brainchild of veteran storyteller and cultural advocate Duma Ndlovu. At a time when minority languages like Tshivenda had limited representation in mainstream media, Muvhango became a powerful platform to amplify marginalised voices, celebrate culture, and explore the friction and fusion between tradition and modern life.
“Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated in South Africa now. It has been a privilege to centre marginalised cultures on television,” said Executive Producer Duma Ndlovu.
Over the years, the show gifted viewers a colourful cast of characters—Edward, Thandaza, Doobsie, Azwindini, KK, Mulalo—and compelling plots that made Monday to Friday evenings a staple for millions. From royal rivalries to dramatic love triangles, Muvhango wove culture and modern storytelling into a uniquely South African experience.
Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment Lala Tuku praised the show’s legacy:
“Muvhango has been more than just a drama—it’s been a champion of language, culture, and national pride. As we evolve, SABC2 is excited to build on this incredible legacy with new stories that reflect our diverse nation.“
As the countdown to its final broadcast begins, SABC2 expressed heartfelt thanks to the cast, crew, and most importantly, the loyal fans who’ve been part of this journey for 28 years.
