Bennum Van Jaarsveld is a proud South African with a heart rooted in service, leadership, and transformation. With over two decades of corporate experience and a passion for community upliftment, he is now in the running for the Mister Global South Africa title. Alongside his bid for the crown, Bennum dedicates himself to weekly charitable work with Kencare, a neighborhood feeding scheme that helps hundreds of vulnerable individuals.

In this exclusive interview with My Afrika Magazine, he reflects on his journey, aspirations, and the values driving his campaign to be crowned Mister Global South Africa.

TR: Can you introduce yourself to our readers and share a bit about your background?
BJ: Originally from the Eastern Cape, I’ve been a resident of the City of Gold for 25 years, living in the picturesque area of Kensington. I have 23 years of corporate work experience focused on business management, communications and public relations, media, marketing and brand strategy, people management, and team building across industries—ranging from media, broadcasting, automotive, and software to commercial décor and retail. Recently, I transitioned into the short-term insurance industry. I’m also a professional master of ceremonies and motivational speaker. While I love being around people, I also enjoy quiet time at home, soaking up the sun beside the pool. I’m passionate about travel, South African wildlife, and believe in the importance of balance for overall well-being.

TR: What inspired you to contest for the Mister Global South Africa title, and what does the title mean to you?
BJ: At this stage in my journey, I want to do more with my life and have a meaningful impact. I’m challenging myself to be the best version of me—mentally, spiritually, and physically. This competition is not just about looks and fitness; it’s about being a man of essence—leading, influencing, inspiring, and uplifting my community. The title is both an honor and a tool to inspire others that it’s never too late to pursue dreams and take on new challenges.

TR: You participated in the pageant’s Outbox Challenge, where you cooked Kook Kos. Can you share the recipe and why you chose this dish?
BJ: One of my favorite meals to cook for friends and family is homely food. I prepare beef fillet medallions with fresh cream, mushrooms, and lots of garlic in a cast-iron pot. I pair that with green beans and potatoes, and sweet potatoes flavored with cinnamon, ginger, sugar, and butter. Everything gets extra butter—you can’t go wrong (don’t tell my trainer)!

TR: What makes South Africa unique, and how do you think this uniqueness can be showcased globally?
BJ: Our people. Our resilience. Our humor. The ability to carry on despite the challenges we face. South Africans pull together, support each other, and find solutions—we always “make a plan.”

TR: You’ve been dominating the People’s Choice public vote. What do you think sets you apart from the other contestants?
BJ: I’m blown away by the support from family, friends, my network, and the public. People remember how you made them feel. I believe in helping whenever I can. While every contestant has unique strengths, mine are empathy, sincerity, and my ability to connect with people. My years of experience also help.

TR: As a master of ceremonies, do you think this gives you an edge in the pageant?
BJ: I’m comfortable on stage and in front of audiences. Something inside me comes alive when I speak. The role of Mister Global SA requires someone with strong communication and presentation skills. My fluency in English and Afrikaans enables me to connect with diverse audiences.

TR: Your charity work with Kencare at Kensington Methodist has touched many hearts. Can you tell us more about this experience?
BJ: Volunteering at Kencare has become a weekly commitment. It’s a feeding scheme in my neighborhood that supports between 80–110 people every week. On Wednesdays, we prepare food and serve those who are homeless, unemployed, or hungry. “Start where you are, with what you have” is a principle I live by. Every effort counts toward building a better, kinder world.

TR: How do you think your platform as Mister Global South Africa can be used to make a positive impact?
BJ: Mister Global is about leadership, inspiration, and community upliftment. The platform gives a larger voice to help where it’s needed most. It also opens doors internationally to collaborate and support self-improvement and resilience in communities.

TR: Why do you think you should be crowned King? What qualities make you deserving of the title?
BJ: My life experiences, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the inner work I’ve done have prepared me for this role. Influence means nothing without being grounded. I bring communication skills, eloquence, organizational ability, and proven leadership. More importantly, I bring empathy, sincerity, and a deep connection with people from all walks of life.

TR: How would you use your platform to uplift children from disadvantaged backgrounds?
BJ: My corporate experience has involved various kasi upliftment projects. The key is involving the community itself. I’d use the platform to raise awareness around hunger and drug abuse and help establish community centers—safe, sustainable spaces offering healthy activities and feeding schemes.

TR: How do you plan to balance your duties as Mister Global South Africa with your personal life?
BJ: If you want something done, give it to a busy person! I’m already balancing several responsibilities. Being self-employed and involved in our family business gives me flexibility. Adaptability is key, and I’m ready to give this role my full attention and commitment.

TR: What message do you want to share with your supporters and the public?
BJ: It’s never too late to change your life or chase your dreams. Don’t give up—there’s always a solution to your problems. Believe in yourself and show up for yourself every day.
