Yokohama, Japan – Ghana and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation following a high-level meeting between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Japanese counterpart, Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, held on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
The meeting, which took place on Friday, August 22, highlighted the importance of TICAD as a platform for advancing Ghana-Japan relations, with discussions ranging from infrastructure development to global governance reforms.
Minister Iwaya expressed his condolences for the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians, including the Ministers of Defense and Environment, in an accident earlier this month. He also noted the historic bond between the two nations, referencing the upcoming 100th anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s arrival in Ghana, which remains a cornerstone of Japan-Ghana friendship.
For his part, Minister Ablakwa commended Japan for its successful hosting of TICAD 9 and praised Tokyo’s consistent contributions, particularly in the field of health. He emphasized Ghana’s desire to strengthen bilateral ties ahead of several key milestones: the 2027 centenary of Dr. Noguchi’s voyage, the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and the 50th anniversary of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Volunteer Program.
Infrastructure cooperation was a central theme, with focus on major projects such as the Volivo Bridge and Kumasi Inner City Roads. Minister Iwaya reiterated Japan’s support in this sector while calling for improved business conditions to expand economic relations. Minister Ablakwa, in turn, expressed gratitude for Japan’s assistance in infrastructure and agriculture and urged greater Japanese private investment in Ghana.
The ministers also exchanged views on international and regional issues, agreeing to work closely on United Nations Security Council reform, North Korea’s missile and nuclear challenges, and the long-standing abduction issue.
The meeting underscored the mutual commitment of both countries to not only strengthen bilateral relations but also collaborate in addressing global challenges. With significant anniversaries on the horizon, Ghana and Japan’s partnership is poised to enter a new era of cooperation built on shared values of development, resilience, and peace.
