Fashion designer George Takora recently unveiled his latest collection, “Hunta” (Muvhimi in Shona), at Zimbabwe Fashion Week, captivating audiences with a bold fusion of tradition, storytelling, and modern design.
Inspired by personal experiences, challenges, achievements, and relationships, Hunta—meaning “hunter” in Shona, symbolises a warrior navigating life’s jungle to provide for their loved ones.
“The journey was smooth and blessed,” Takora shared, crediting his grandmother, mother, and little sister for helping craft several of the outfits.
The collection holds deep significance for Takora Designs, marking a defining moment in the brand’s evolution. Blending modern aesthetics with traditional African elements, the designs feature earthy tones, symbolic prints, and handcrafted textures that celebrate Africa’s spirit in a contemporary way.
“Through earth tones, I aim to celebrate our heritage in a modern way—to show that being proudly African isn’t just about looking back, but about reimagining our culture for today’s world,” Takora explained.
Each outfit in the collection was crafted with meticulous attention to meaning and material, a process that Takora describes as both challenging and rewarding.
“The most challenging part was ensuring each outfit reflected its story—each required different materials, time, and mood,” he revealed.
Takora views his work as a bridge between tradition and modern lifestyle, using fashion as a language to share African identity with the world.
“I see my designs as a bridge between tradition and modern lifestyle. They’re a way to express African identity in a contemporary form,” he said.
With aspirations to see his designs on international runways and in global collaborations, Takora hopes to inspire the fashion world to embrace authenticity and cultural diversity.
“I want my aesthetics to walk international runways and influence global fashion to embrace authenticity and cultural diversity,” he stated.
Notably, Takora Designs has dressed prominent figures including Hope Masike, celebrated mbira artist, Future Nyoni, Mister Southern Africa International, and musician Shona Prince.
With Hunta, Takora reaffirms his mission: to position African fashion on the global stage—bold, proud, and deeply rooted in identity.
