Exploring the Essence of Dance: Insights from Kuda The Choreographer

During wedding season, the spotlight falls on Kudakwashe Makaza, better known as Kuda The Choreographer, a name synonymous with elegance and rhythm in the wedding industry.

With a portfolio that includes choreographing chart-topping music videos and gracing international stages, Kudakwashe’s journey reflects a blend of passion, dedication, and artistic finesse.

In an exclusive interview with My Afrika Magazine journalist Tapiwanashe Rubaya (TR), Kudakwashe (KC) shares insights into his career trajectory, international ventures, and the essence of dance in his life.

TR: How would you personally define the essence of dance?

KC: Dance is a form of expression that transcends language, culture, and boundaries.

TR: Reflecting on the journey, when did you establish your brand, ‘Kuda The Choreographer’?

KC: Kuda The Choreographer is a multi-award-winning brand that began its journey in the dance industry. Specializing in wedding choreography, Zumba fitness, and corporate events, my career path was shaped with the help of a childhood friend, Tapfumanei, who played a pivotal role in refining my skills.

TR: With such a diverse career, one can imagine your passport is filled with international stamps. How has your journey as an international choreographer unfolded?

KC: Being a choreographer, particularly a wedding choreographer, has allowed me to travel across Africa and beyond. From China to the UK, South Africa to Dubai, I’ve had the privilege of attending weddings and sharing my craft internationally. As for future destinations, I’d say, watch this space.

TR: We’re currently during wedding season. How many weddings are you choreographing this season?

KC: I’m booked to create memories at six weddings so far this season.

TR: Who is your clientele, and do you select who you work with?

KC: My clientele ranges from individuals of all ages to fitness enthusiasts, corporates, and musicians. When selecting clients, I prioritize commitment to learning and passion for dance, as it fosters a more fruitful collaboration.

TR: How do you ensure that your choreography enhances the couple’s moment rather than overshadowing them?

KC: It’s crucial to keep the focus on the bride and groom. By choreographing dances that complement their personalities and style, I aim to create a beautiful and memorable experience that revolves around them.

TR: Aside from weddings, you’ve collaborated with numerous artists. Can you mention some of them?

KC: I’ve had the pleasure of working with artists such as Koffie Olomide, Chris Martin, Jah Prayzah, and Roki, among others. Each collaboration has been a valuable learning experience.

TR: Your work has been celebrated locally and internationally. Can you share some of the awards you’ve received as a choreographer?

KC: I was honored with the Best Wedding Choreographer award at the 2022 Zimbabwe Wedding Industry Network Gala. Additionally, I was voted Outstanding Choreographer in South Africa.

TR: You possess a myriad of talents beyond wedding choreography. What other roles do you fulfill?

KC: Besides wedding choreography, I’m a music choreographer, Zumba fitness dancer, music video choreographer, and dance class instructor, among other roles.

TR: As a future bride, I’m already considering making an early booking for my wedding. Are you open to that?

KC: (Laughs) Consider it done! You can make bookings through my PA without hesitation.

With each step of his journey, Kudakwashe Makaza continues to inspire and captivate audiences, leaving an indelible mark on the world of dance and entertainment. As he navigates wedding season and embraces new horizons, his passion for dance remains unwavering, promising a future filled with rhythm, grace, and artistic brilliance.
