TR: Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background and how you got into modeling?
FS:
My name is Farai Mqondisi Sibanda, and my journey into the creative industry started with photography. I was always drawn to the artistic side of capturing images and telling stories visually. Over time, that passion naturally evolved into modeling and brand ambassadorship, where I had the opportunity to represent reputable brands and participate in various fashion shows. Modeling has become a true extension of my creativity and personality.

TR: What was your experience like participating in the “I Wear My Culture” fashion show in Bulawayo, and what did you enjoy most about it?
FS:
It was an incredible experience! I genuinely love working with professional teams that respect and value models. The show was well-organized, filled with fun moments, learning opportunities, and so much positive energy. What stood out most for me was the networking—meeting other models, designers, planners, and creatives who are passionate about what they do. It was truly a celebration of culture and fashion, and it broadened my horizons in so many ways.

TR: How do you think your modeling style differs from others in Bulawayo, and what unique qualities do you bring to the runway?
FS:
I would say confidence and creative styling are what set me apart. Bulawayo is a hub of creativity, and I channel that in everything I do. I’m passionate about styling every look to perfection, making even the simplest outfits look striking. Confidence has always been part of my DNA—I was raised to walk tall and feel my best. On the runway, that confidence allows me to express my true self fully and connect with the audience.

TR: How does modeling in Bulawayo compare to modeling in other cities, such as Harare? What opportunities and challenges do you face in each city?
FS:
Bulawayo is incredibly creative, but the industry here faces challenges, especially in terms of financial support and exposure. In Harare, there are generally more opportunities and better-paying gigs. However, the travel costs and logistics make it tough for Bulawayo-based models to take advantage of those opportunities. That said, Bulawayo models are resilient, and we keep finding ways to grow despite the obstacles.

TR: What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a model in Bulawayo, and how do you overcome them?
FS:
The biggest challenges are payment issues and professionalism. Not every job values the model’s work fairly. Over time, I’ve learned to be selective—I only work with reputable and trustworthy people. Respect is another issue, but I overcome that by carrying myself with respect. When you present yourself professionally, you naturally attract the same energy in return.

TR: You’re a football fan – which teams do you support, apart from Highlanders?
FS:
(Laughs) Oh, definitely! Apart from Highlanders, I support Mamelodi Sundowns, Manchester United, Arsenal, and FC Barcelona. I’m a big football enthusiast, so I enjoy watching and following different teams.

TR: Do you think your passion for football influences your modeling career in any way?
FS:
Absolutely. Footballers are incredibly fit and disciplined, and that inspires me to maintain the same level of commitment. I love working out and keeping my body healthy, which is essential in modeling. Fitness isn’t just about appearance—it’s about mental strength and endurance too.

TR: What do you enjoy most about being a model, and what motivates you to continue pursuing this career path?
FS:
I love the fashion—completely. Working with creative teams keeps me motivated. Fashion is fun, expressive, and ever-evolving. Each project pushes me to grow and improve. What drives me most is the idea of becoming better at my craft and inspiring others through my journey.

TR: How do you prepare for a photoshoot or fashion show, and what tips would you give to aspiring models?
FS:
Preparation is everything. I listen to music that pumps me up, stay hydrated, eat well, and work out regularly. I also research the show or brand I’ll be representing so I know what’s expected. My advice to aspiring models is: be disciplined, respect yourself, and always act professionally. Say no to shortcuts and never compromise your integrity. Show up on time, stay confident, and remember—Rome wasn’t built in a day.

TR: Who are some of your biggest inspirations in the modeling industry, and why do you admire them?
FS:
I draw a lot of inspiration from Dr. Fezile, the former Mr. South Africa and Mr Supranational. He’s proof that intelligence and modeling can coexist. His success shows that modeling isn’t something to be underestimated—it’s a profession that blends creativity, intelligence, and influence. That’s the balance I strive for in my own career.
