On the 10th of May, Zimbabwe joined the world in commemorating Europe Day, which is observed between the 9th and 10th of May. Nations across the globe gathered at various European consulates as they marked this important day.

In Zimbabwe, European diplomats, politicians from across all political parties, and religious leaders gathered at the EU Embassy. In attendance were politicians from different political parties in Zimbabwe, including the ruling party ZANU PF and former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa, along with diplomats from non-EU countries.

The main guest speaker at the event was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sheilla Chikomo. Addressing the guests, the Deputy Minister emphasized the progress made in relations between the EU and Zimbabwe. She stated that the Government of Zimbabwe hopes the two parties, the EU and Zimbabwe, will continue to strengthen their ties, not only economically but also socially.

The celebration comes at a time when Zimbabwe is set to host the Zimbabwe–EU Business Forum, scheduled for the 20th to the 23rd of May. Europe’s relationship with Africa is often described as multifaceted.

EU countries remain major trading partners for many African nations, although China and Russia are increasingly establishing beneficial economic relations with the continent. In politics, Europe and Africa cooperate on various issues, including security, governance, and human rights.

However, some African countries, particularly those in the Sahel region, are critical of European paternalism and perceived interference in their internal affairs. Immigration continues to be a contentious issue in Europe–Africa relations, with conflict, climate change, and poverty contributing to migration.

In Zimbabwe, the country has benefited from EU support in the political, economic, and education sectors.
