The United Kingdom has appointed Gill Lever OBE as its new Ambassador to Zimbabwe, succeeding Peter Vowles, who has been named Britain’s next Ambassador to Nigeria.

Lever will assume her post in September 2026 following the Zimbabwean Government’s approval of her appointment. She brings extensive diplomatic experience, having most recently served as the UK’s Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Nigeria, and previously as Deputy Head of Mission in Juba, South Sudan.

Upon her arrival in Harare, Lever will present copies of her credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade before formally presenting her Letters of Credence to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The ceremony will also mark the official conclusion of Vowles’ tenure through the presentation of his Letters of Recall.

Her appointment comes as Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom continue to strengthen engagement in areas including trade, investment, education, climate resilience and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Peter Vowles departs Zimbabwe after a tenure marked by active engagement with government, business, civil society and development partners. Widely admired for embracing Zimbabwean culture and connecting with local communities, he now takes up one of Britain’s most significant diplomatic postings as Ambassador to Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy.

The appointments reflect the UK’s continued commitment to deepening partnerships across Africa by placing experienced diplomats in key strategic missions.

As Gill Lever prepares to begin her assignment in Harare and Peter Vowles embarks on his new role in Abuja, the transition marks a new chapter in Britain’s diplomatic engagement with Zimbabwe and the wider African continent.
