It is always a brave action to go against the popular trend especially in these days when people would rather ‘trend’ and ‘stand out’. In a market which has a taste for certain kinds of music, Randall Tagwireyi has honoured the calling of his heart and is building a career as an indie rock and folk musician. A singer who pays close attention to his life and personal experiences, he harnesses these moments to create music that has touched many hearts.
Tagwireyi is a Zimbabwean singer-songwriter, guitarists and music producer who started out his journey in 2011. While he was still in high school, he formed a hip-hop group with his classmates and they managed to record their work. In 2015 he traded writing hip-hop lyrics for creating music beats. His venture into indie-rock may not be all too improbable. “Growing up I was a really huge fan of Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Electric music and Pop music. I started listening to bands like Coldplay, U2, Radiohead, Linkin Park etcetera when I was in primary school.” Tagwireyi also seems to follow the footsteps of his father Isaac Tagwireyi. “My Dad was a full-time session musician, played bass guitar in local bands like Summer Breezy and many more! He played at Jazz 105.”
His decision to venture into indie rock was not without doubts. Tagwireyi has said that he was scared of his decision but discovered a following of indie rock in Zimbabwe. He honed his craft at institutions such as the Zimbabwe College of Music and Music Crossroads Zimbabwe. “I always try to keep my lyrics honest and easy to connect with. Full of positivity, motivational topics. I would say I sing about our day to day living, lyrics that are really straight forward.”
In 2024 he released his debut EP titled ‘Zvizvhinji’ which features the singles such as ‘Mberi’ which is an encouragement to move forward through life. ‘Pedo’ is a love song expressing desire to be close to one’s lover and feels almost like a lullaby. The EP also features the song ‘Baba naAmai’ a song of appreciation to his parents likening their absence like a fish out of water. “Zvizvhinji [is] an experimental EP. That’s when I was just starting out my music journey as a singer-songwriter, guitarist and music producer; just after I was about to finish my studies at Music Crossroads Zimbabwe in 2023.” He says the greatest lesson he learned from releasing this work was the importance of consistency. The rising star has performed on platforms such as the Harare Open Mic.
He followed up his debut with the 2025 EP ‘Mangwanani.’ The work features a collaboration with Bush Baby X. When it comes to collaborations, he said “When I create an instrumental, sometimes I can just feel maybe someone who can fit on it for example when I made ‘Hukama’, I feel that Bush Baby X can actually fit on that song…it’s all about the feeling and vibes of the music.” He shared that he would like to collaborate with Coldplay among various artists both locally and internationally. ‘Mangwanani’ also presented a pivotal moment in Tagwireyi’s career. He said the EP introduced him to a wider audience across the world while also increasing his followership. He recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the EP which has helped propel him onto higher ground.
Among his list of musical influences, he sites Jah Prayzah, Winky D, Bantu Spaceship, Shingai, Chikwata 263, Curfew Midnight, Mann Friday, Mary Anibal, Sambiri, Sylent Nqo and the Pied Pipers. Internationally he is a fan of U2, Coldplay, Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Little Dragon, Q-Tip and many more.
“Personally, I think music chose me,” he shared with us. When it comes to the future, he boldly tells us that he is unsure of what lies ahead. “I’m sure God is preparing good things for me. I only wish to make brilliant music. One day I would love to own a professional studio, performing at bigger stages.” A man of many interests, he enjoys both playing and watching cricket, travelling and farming.
