Harare — As Zimbabwe Fashion Week (ZFW) continues to unfold, the event took an insightful turn on October 9, hosting two thought-provoking fireside discussions that delved into some of the most critical issues shaping the future of Africa’s fashion industry.
The sessions, titled “Beyond the Cart: Building Ethical E-Commerce for African Creatives” and “Culture as Capital: Music, Beauty, Fashion and Design in a Changing World,” brought together leading industry experts to share perspectives on sustainability, innovation, and cultural identity within the creative sector.
The first discussion, Beyond the Cart, explored strategies for creating inclusive online marketplaces that prioritize fair labor practices, cultural sensitivity, and environmental responsibility. Panelists examined both the opportunities and challenges of building ethical e-commerce platforms that empower African designers while promoting sustainable fashion practices.
Meanwhile, Culture as Capital examined the intersection of culture and commerce, highlighting how music, beauty, fashion, and design can serve as powerful drivers of economic growth, cultural exchange, and social transformation. Panelists reflected on the importance of cultural preservation, the value of creative collaboration, and building partnerships that elevate African identity in global markets.
Both discussions were hosted in The Steward Room, moderated by a seasoned industry professional who guided engaging, solutions-driven conversations. The sessions reaffirmed ZFW’s role as a hub for creative dialogue and as a platform that amplifies African voices shaping the global fashion narrative.
Beyond the panels, the evening’s runway showcase celebrated the very essence of African fashion excellence. The catwalk came alive with bold colors, intricate craftsmanship, and unique storytelling from designers including Empowerment Design Studio (Pia Hintz), Afro Jumbo (Evelyn Mubochwa), Reenzara (Mehreen Kamal), Hunhu Colectiv, Planet Avur (Ruvarashe Mutsinze), French Kiss Luxury (Victoria Karonga), and Urban Zulu (Papy Kalu).
Each collection reflected a distinct creative vision — from Empowerment Design Studio’s confident, empowering silhouettes to Afro Jumbo’s vibrant celebration of heritage and Reenzara’s refined elegance. Hunhu Colectiv’s multi-designer collaboration stood out for its diversity, while Planet Avur emphasized sustainability with modern eco-conscious flair. French Kiss Luxury delivered opulence and craftsmanship, and Urban Zulu brought energy to the runway with its bold, culturally inspired designs.
Together, these designers reaffirmed that African fashion is a force to be reckoned with — dynamic, diverse, and deeply rooted in the continent’s cultural richness. Their work not only pushes creative boundaries but also promotes cultural exchange, drives economic growth, and continues to redefine Africa’s global fashion identity.
