We first featured Samuel Chawana in 2023 when we spoke about his debut book “Juggling Life,” a powerful testimony of how he struggled with poverty, abandonment and addiction while triumphing and finding healing through faith and his trust in God. Since then, he has travelled the world as a religious leader, released a book in early 2024 and continues to inspire dozens through his ministry and work.

Chawana is set to release his latest book, Before I Marry, in early November in Harare, Zimbabwe. Ahead of the launch, My Afrika Magazine columnist Kudzai Mhangwa (KM) sat down with Chawana (SM) to discuss the upcoming release and reflect on his literary journey and achievements so far.

KM: We last spoke in 2023 when you released “Juggling Life.” How was the reception for that book?SC: “Juggling Life” sold out and is currently out of print, something that still humbles me to this day. The response was incredible, many readers connected deeply with the message. I was especially touched when at least five new authors told me they found the courage to write their own stories after reading mine.

KM: That’s really beautiful! You shared a lot of personal details in the book. When I read it I thought you were so courageous. How do you feel about being so vulnerable as a writer?
SC: Vulnerability is the heartbeat of meaningful connection. It wasn’t easy sharing so much of myself, but that honestly gave the book its power. Even though some parts could have been refined, I believe the raw authenticity is what made “Juggling Life” stand out and resonate with readers.

KM: You once shared with me “When the demands of life get many we don’t quit, we get juggling” What have you been juggling of late?
SC: The juggling never stops! Between ministry, entrepreneurship, writing and personal development coaching, every day is a balancing act. But as I always say, when life demands more, we don’t quit, we get juggling.

KM: Since your debut book you also released “I Am Joyful” in March of last year. What is the book about?
SC: “I Am Joyful” challenges people to see life differently. It’s about finding meaning even in painful seasons because once you catch that meaning, joy becomes constant, not circumstantial. It’s a guide to living joyfully on purpose, regardless of life’s ups and downs.

KM: How has reception for “Joyful” been so far?
SC: The response was overwhelming. Copies sold out faster than I expected, and the feedback has been incredibly encouraging. Many readers said the book helped them rediscover peace and gratitude in seasons when joy seemed impossible.

KM: Now you are on your latest book “Before I Marry.” Interesting title! What inspired this book?
SC: This book was born out of reflection and experience. Having counselled couples from a young age, I realized that marriage is sacred, yet too many enter it unprepared. I wanted to take my own journey before I marry and share the questions, lessons and wisdom gathered along the way. It’s both personal and a call for my generation to restore the reverence of this union.

KM: We are living in such a turbulent time when the institute of marriage is truly being tested, the statistics in Zimbabwe alone show thousands of divorces in the past year. As a counsellor and pastor, what are the issues people in marriages are facing?
SC: The challenges are many. From unspoken expectations and mismatched visions to a lack of genuine communication, many couples face surprises that could have been avoided. Too often, people prepare for the wedding day but not for the lifelong partnership that follows.

KM: Do some of these insight appear in the book?
SC: Yes, those insights are woven throughout the pages of “Before I Marry.” It’s not theory, it’s lived experience, heartfelt lessons and a touch of humour to make difficult truths easier to digest. Readers will see reflections of real conversations and real people.

KM: What can we expect at the book launch?
SC: The launch will be unlike anything Zimbabwe has seen before! I wanted to create a night that combines elegance, laughter, learning and transformation. Expect beautiful music, deep conversations and an atmosphere where people don’t just attend; they leave inspired and changed.

KM: Mr Chawana congratulations on your third book! What are your final words for our readers?
SC: My final words would be this: anything worthwhile requires preparation and marriage is no exception. Despite the current challenges, I still believe marriage is a godly and beautiful union. When entered with understanding and purpose, it remains one of life’s greatest blessings.

“Before I Marry” is set for launch on the 1st of November at the Cresta Lodge Hotel in Zimbabwe.
