Addis Ababa — A new chapter in Africa’s media landscape began today as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali officially launched the Pulse of Africa, a pan-African media platform envisioned to amplify authentic African voices and reshape how the continent is represented globally.

The launch fulfills a vision the Prime Minister first articulated in 2022 during the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly, where he called for the creation of a continental media institution capable of telling Africa’s story from within, by Africans, for Africans.

In his remarks at the launch, Prime Minister Abiy described Pulse of Africa as both a response and a solution to the longstanding misrepresentation of Africa in global media narratives. “The launch of the pan-African media platform Pulse of Africa marks an important step toward countering negative media representations of Africa and asserting our agency in shaping our own narratives,” he said.

He emphasized that while Africa is vast, rich, and full of potential, it has too often been portrayed through narrow and distorted lenses. “This is why Pulse of Africa represents such a significant and humble beginning — one that, in the coming years, is poised to grow into a leading continental media platform,” the Prime Minister added.

Envisioned as a unifying media platform, Pulse of Africa seeks to promote African perspectives, foster regional integration, and highlight the continent’s achievements, challenges, and aspirations. It aims to provide a space for collaboration among African journalists, creatives, and institutions, focusing on storytelling that celebrates progress while engaging critically with the issues shaping the continent.

Abiy expressed confidence that the platform’s establishment marks a key milestone in Africa’s broader journey toward economic and cultural sovereignty. “There is no doubt that Africa is on the path to becoming a major industrial powerhouse and a key global player,” he noted. “The establishment of Pulse of Africa is therefore a forward-looking step, laying the foundation for a strong and authentic African voice in global media.”
