
Lilongwe, Malawi – President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, food security, and economic empowerment for the people of Nkhatabay District. Speaking at the opening of the 51st session of Parliament, he highlighted the significant progress made over the past four years and outlined future initiatives to uplift the region.
On food security, Chakwera announced the construction of a 450-hectare Linga Irrigation Scheme, part of 16 new irrigation projects covering 2,215 hectares. The Green Belt Authority has also restored 100 hectares through rehabilitation efforts, with plans for additional schemes to boost agricultural productivity. The government, in partnership with the World Food Programme, has supported farmers with loans and resources, while 2,296 metric tons of maize worth K1.1 billion have been distributed to 10,494 families in need.
Infrastructure remains a priority, with investments in rural electrification, roads, bridges, and essential services. Over 2,475 households have been connected to electricity through the Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP), while 4,849 homes now benefit from solar energy. Health and education have also seen improvements, with the construction of five health posts, 10 teachers’ houses, and four administration blocks. Additionally, the Nkhatabay Water Supply and Sanitation Project, now completed, is providing safe water to 105,000 people.
Chakwera emphasized that economic empowerment initiatives are also underway, including K3.1 billion in loans disbursed through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) and social cash transfers benefiting 6,470 vulnerable households. He assured Malawians that his government remains focused on development, sustainability, and poverty reduction, promising continued progress in the years ahead.
