Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has announced the completion of one of Ethiopia’s largest urban infrastructure developments, the Sar Bet–German Square–Furi Corridor Project, a transformative initiative covering more than 589 hectares and set to reshape the capital’s urban landscape.

Speaking after touring the site with members of the Prosperity Party Executive Committee, Prime Minister Abiy described the development as a milestone in Ethiopia’s ongoing urban modernization drive. “Our national corridor development projects like this one are playing a vital role in boosting local economic activity, improving mobility, and enhancing social interaction by creating vibrant, accessible, and sustainable urban spaces,” he said.

Spanning a total of 589 hectares, the corridor stands as the second largest and widest site in Addis Ababa after Kazanchis. It includes 16.5 km of asphalt roads, 3 km of internal roads, and 33 km of pedestrian walkways, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

The project also features plazas, sports facilities, children’s playgrounds, and 5.2 km of riverbank development, providing recreational and community spaces. To promote green and sustainable living, the development includes 50.5 hectares of green spaces, 13.3 km of bicycle lanes, and an electric vehicle charging station.

Additionally, 1,107 retail shops built by both government and private entities, along with parking areas, transport terminals, and 38 taxi and bus bays, are expected to create new jobs and stimulate small business growth.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that projects like this corridor are central to Ethiopia’s urban renewal and economic growth agenda, turning city spaces into dynamic, people-centered environments.

The newly completed development reflects Ethiopia’s broader commitment to sustainable urbanization, blending infrastructure, environment, and enterprise to support a more connected and prosperous future.
