In the heat of the biggest rivalry in African women’s football, a moment of unity emerged that reminded the world why sport transcends the scoreboard.

Just hours before the highly anticipated WAFCON 2024 semifinal clash between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, South African defender Gabriela Salgado was all smiles at the pre-match press conference. The 28-year-old, finally realizing her dream of playing on Africa’s biggest stage, shared her excitement and belief in her team’s unity and strength.

“I think the team is prepared, we’re ready, we know what we have to do,” she told the packed room of journalists, exuding confidence and pride.

But fate took a cruel turn.

During the fierce battle on the pitch at Casablanca’s Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Salgado suffered a devastating leg fracture that silenced the crowd and shook both teams. Players from Nigeria and South Africa alike fell into stunned silence, some dropped to their knees, others consoled each other, and many turned away in visible distress.

Salgado was swiftly rushed to Mohamed VI University Hospital, where she underwent successful surgery. According to Banyana Banyana team doctor Dr. Lindi Mokoena, she will be out for the rest of the year. “We are pleased she received exceptional care… we extend heartfelt gratitude to CAF and the hospital staff for their professionalism and support,” the statement read.

In a touching message, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa praised Salgado’s bravery:

“Gabriela, I know you’re a woman of deep and public faith, and of skill on the pitch. The nation wishes you a speedy recovery.”

But the most heartwarming gesture came from Nigeria’s Super Falcons, who visited Salgado in hospital, putting aside the rivalry and showing what football is truly about. Their visit, coupled with messages of love and support across social media, captured global admiration.

“This is more than football,” one fan wrote online. “This is family.”

Salgado’s journey — from heartbreak in 2022 to triumph in 2024, and now facing yet another recovery — is one of resilience, faith, and unshakable spirit. And as she heals, she does so not only with the love of South Africa behind her, but with the solidarity of the entire continent.

Because sometimes, the most beautiful victories in football are not about goals — but about grace.
