Zimbabwean artist Keith Zenda (KZ) recently embarked on an artistic journey to Switzerland, marking his debut at the country’s prestigious art fair. With a unique blend of African heritage and contemporary flair, Keith’s artwork captivated European audiences, sparking meaningful conversations about culture, identity, and creativity. In this exclusive interview, he shares the details of his journey with My Afrika Magazine reporter Tapiwanashe Rubaya (TR).
TR: Congratulations on exhibiting at the art fair in Switzerland! What inspired your artwork for this showcase?
KZ: The inspiration for my artwork came from the idea of cultural exchange. Knowing I would be showcasing in Switzerland, I wanted to create pieces that reflect my Zimbabwean heritage while engaging with a global audience. Being at my first Swiss art fair and seeing the work of European artists in person made the experience even more enriching. I truly loved every moment of it.
TR: You travelled with Tonderai Mujuru, another Zimbabwean artist, while in Switzerland. Can you share more about travelling together?
KZ: I attended the fair with Tonderai Mujuru, a renowned wildlife artist based in Harare, Zimbabwe. We showcased works by various artists, including Barry Lungu, Sampson Kuvenguwa, Florah Maphosa, and Descent Nyoni. We also represented artists from South Africa, India, and Germany, highlighting our mission to bridge continents through art.
TR: Can you tell us about your experience traveling across the world and exhibiting your art in different countries? What has been the highlight so far?
KZ: As part of our global journey, we have exhibited in Asian countries like South Korea and Dubai. Our next stop is the New York Hampton Art Exhibition in America. Through art and adventure, we are promoting Zimbabwean tourism and culture, and we are grateful for the support of the Zimbabwe Embassy in Berlin and the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality.
TR: You have distributed your book, The Art of Keith Zenda, in Switzerland. What inspired you to create this book, and what does it mean to you as an artist?
KZ: During the fair, I launched my book The Art of Keith Zenda, which was created and edited by my friend and business partner, Dennis Ruf. The book tells my story, showcasing my art, faith, and Zimbabwean culture. It has been well-received, and I am thrilled to share it with the world.
TR: How do you stay connected to your Zimbabwean roots while living and working in Switzerland? Does your cultural background influence your art?
KZ: My art is deeply rooted in Zimbabwean culture and traditions, and I continue to draw inspiration from my heritage.
TR: What kind of feedback have you received from European audiences about your artwork? Has it been what you expected?
KZ: The positive response from European audiences has been encouraging, and I am excited about upcoming international exhibitions.
TR: As an artist, do you have a favorite website or platform where people can view your work? Can you share the link with us?
KZ: You can find my work online at:

TR: We have heard that food can be a great inspiration for art. What is your favorite Swiss dish or food experience so far, and has it influenced your work in any way?
KZ: Traveling and experiencing different cultures has been a great source of inspiration for my art. I have enjoyed trying new foods, especially Swiss chocolates, and I have even attempted to learn some Swiss menu items though pronouncing them is a challenge! Of course, I miss my staple food, sadza, and I often ask where I can find it when I am abroad. Through art, I am proud to share my Zimbabwean culture with the world and promote cross-cultural understanding.
TR: What is next for Keith Zenda?
KZ: Watch this space as we reach out to all four corners of the world, telling our African, Zimbabwean story.
This is great and inspirational ❤️
