Mister Tshwane Regions is one of the longest-running male pageants in South Africa, directed by former model Asan Mahlangu. In an exclusive interview with My Afrika Magazine reporter, Tapiwa Rubaya (TR), Asan Mahlangu (AM) shares how the foundation of Mister Tshwane began and how the South African community has benefited from the pageant.
TR: What inspired you to create the Mister Tshwane pageant?
AM: In 2019, I created Mister Tshwane with a burning passion to uplift my community and empower our youth. I wanted to provide a platform that would boost their confidence, keep them off the streets, and give them a sense of purpose. It has been an incredible journey, and I am proud of what we have achieved so far.
TR: What role do you think male pageantry plays in promoting self-confidence and self-expression among men?
AM: Male pageantry plays a monumental role in shattering stereotypes and unleashing the true potential of men. As a finalist, you are not just competing; you are transforming. You are breaking free from societal norms and embracing your authentic self. It is a powerful catalyst for confidence, self-expression, and growth.
TR: What qualities do you look for in a contestant when judging a male pageant?
AM: When judging, I look for that spark, a contestant who embodies charm, confidence, and charisma. Someone who can command the stage, captivate the audience, and convey their message with conviction. It is not just about physical appearance; it is about substance, passion, and the ability to connect with people.
TR: What advice would you give to contestants on how to prepare for a male pageant competition?
AM: To succeed in Mister Tshwane Regions, you need to bring your A-game! Be energetic, work tirelessly on your craft, and exude charm. Develop your public speaking skills, stay fit, and most importantly, be unapologetically you. Come prepared, be a force to be reckoned with, and let your authenticity shine through. Show the world what Tshwane Regions is made of!
TR: What do you think are the key characteristics of a successful male model?
AM: A successful male model embodies confidence, poise, and a strong sense of self. They are adaptable, resilient, and quick-thinking. They are not just visually appealing; they are also charismatic, passionate, and genuine.
TR: How has participating in or judging male pageants impacted your personal growth and self-awareness?
AM: Leading Mister Tshwane has been a transformative experience. It has taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and connection. I have grown as a person and become more attuned to the needs and desires of our contestants. It is a privilege to lead something that empowers others.
TR: What skills or values do you think contestants can gain from participating in male pageants?
AM: Participating in Mister Tshwane Regions offers a wealth of benefits, confidence, public speaking skills, networking opportunities, and a sense of community. Contestants learn to be resilient, adaptable, and authentic. They develop a growth mindset and discover their true potential. Representing Tshwane Regions on a bigger stage also instills pride and responsibility, empowering them to become ambassadors of our region.
TR: What current trends do you see in the male pageantry industry?
AM: The industry is shifting towards greater inclusivity, diversity, and authenticity. We are seeing more emphasis on substance over superficiality. Contestants are judged not just on physical appearance but also on their passion, conviction, and character.
TR: What challenges do you think the male pageantry industry faces?
AM: One major challenge is the lack of support and recognition compared to female pageantry. However, I believe this presents an opportunity for growth and innovation. By working together, we can elevate the industry and create a more level playing field.
TR: How does the Mister Tshwane Regions pageant engage with the local community?
AM: Mister Tshwane Regions is deeply rooted in our community. We have implemented various initiatives to promote social responsibility, such as mentoring programs, charity events, and community outreach projects. We believe in giving back and making a positive impact on the lives of those around us.
