In Calgary, Alberta, the African Canadian Golfers Club (ACGC) is redefining what it means to blend sport, community service, and meaningful connection. More than just a golf club, ACGC is a dynamic network of individuals using the game as a platform to cultivate friendship, build trust, and champion community empowerment.

At its heart, ACGC embodies the spirit of community through sport, proving that golf can be a powerful vehicle for social good, friendship, and empowerment. Whether it is creating safe spaces for youth, uplifting marginalized Calgarians, or simply offering a hand of friendship, ACGC is a shining example of how passion and purpose can drive real-world impact.

Founded on the principles of camaraderie and goodwill, ACGC members act as ambassadors for positive change, extending their influence well beyond the golf course into the broader Calgary community.

For ACGC President Vincent Onwuka, the club’s mission is deeply personal and profoundly impactful.

“It has had a huge impact in so many ways,” he explains. “We have seen incredible friendships formed, people coming together to share business ideas and even going into business together, a huge trust amongst people, and a go-to point of contact for accessibility to information. Our membership is made up of people from all walks of life and from all over the world. It is very much open to everyone and everybody.”

Beyond tee times and tournaments, ACGC has become a vital support system for its members, helping one another professionally, personally, and socially. Whether planning vacations, launching businesses, or simply connecting new immigrants to community resources, the club’s ethos of openness and support is embedded in every interaction.

One of ACGC’s proudest initiatives is its Youth Golf Coaching Camps, designed to nurture the next generation of golfers and leaders.

“This is a very important part of what we do,” says Onwuka. “Golf helps build character; it is an honest sport. Playing golf with someone shows you who they really are. Through our programs, the youth are learning honesty, patience, responsibility for their actions, and, importantly, how to form meaningful relationships and connections.”

Through these camps, young people not only develop technical golf skills but also critical life skills that will serve them both on and off the course.

ACGC’s commitment to community engagement extends to addressing urgent social issues like hunger and poverty. Their ongoing support for Calgary’s Community Kitchen Program (CKP) reflects this deep commitment to social responsibility.

“We decided to become socially responsible in the city a lot of us now call home,” says Onwuka. “We are a blessed people and giving back is part of that blessing.”

After a careful vetting process, ACGC chose CKP for its alignment with their mission to create meaningful change. Over the past eight years, ACGC has raised over CAD50,000 to support CKP’s programs. Members also volunteer hands-on, assisting with packing fruits and vegetables for families in need.

“We are really appreciative of the companies and friends who have stepped up year after year to lend their support,” Onwuka adds.

For those who want to join in making a difference, ACGC welcomes individuals and companies to register, donate, or volunteer via their website at https://africancanadiangolfers.com/.

As they continue to grow, the African Canadian Golfers Club is not just building better golfers, they are building a stronger, more connected Calgary.
