Last month, Fashion Without Borders hosted its annual edition in Johannesburg. Among the events was the Fashion Masterclass, which featured several guests, including Etienne Joseph (EJ), a renowned South African model.
In conversation with My Afrika Magazine, Etienne Joseph shares insights into some of the topics discussed during the masterclass and offers a glimpse into his fashion lifestyle.
TR: As a model, what inspired you to pursue a career in the industry, and what do you enjoy most about your job?
EJ: I have always seen fashion as a powerful form of self-expression.
TR: What inspired me was the ability to tell stories without saying a word—just through posture, energy, style, and presence.
EJ: It is also about growth and learning. Being a model teaches you more than people think. For example, it builds confidence and equips you with skills that are helpful not only for castings or interviews in the industry but also for any job interview. It teaches grooming techniques, understanding colours that suit you, and how to present yourself. Time management and discipline like showing up and staying punctual are essential, along with the ability to adapt and improvise in different environments. These habits enhance a model’s professional image and positively impact life beyond the runway. What I enjoy most is the constant evolution. I get to meet creative people, learn from them, and bring something unique to each shoot or show. As my journey continued, having a mentor made a huge difference. I want to acknowledge Teacher Natasha Menino-Costa, coach at ACE Models Vaal, and the ACE Vaal family. She is always there, pushing and encouraging you, seeing your potential even before you do. Her guidance with patience, heart, and support has shaped me both as a model and a person. The belief she instills in you is powerful. Alongside her, the support of my family, friends, and the ACE community lifts me up and keeps me motivated.
TR: Last month, you attended the Masterclass at Fashion Without Borders as a guest. What was your experience like, and what did you learn from the event?
EJ: The Masterclass was incredibly insightful. Being surrounded by industry professionals and creatives opened my eyes to the strategies that go on behind the scenes in fashion. I learned the importance of personal branding, not just looking good, but doing good. Living sustainably and being eco-conscious are important too. It was fascinating to hear different perspectives and see how models engaged with the topics.
TR: You have been featured in several magazines. Can you tell us about your favourite publication you have worked with and why?
EJ: Each magazine experience was different, so it is hard to choose one. Every team I have worked with has been supportive and allowed me to contribute creatively, which made the process more collaborative. It was not just about posing for a camera, it felt meaningful, like I was given a platform to share my voice, purpose, and perspective.
TR: As a model, maintaining physical and mental health is crucial. What is your secret to staying healthy and energized?
EJ: Balance is my secret weapon. I make time for family and friends, it is good for my soul and keeps me grounded. Music helps me unwind while staying inspired. I also believe in maintaining a balanced lifestyle, making time for things beyond modelling, like academics and leadership, to grow in different areas. I take breaks when needed to prioritize my mental health. Working out now and then helps refresh my mind and body, it is not just about staying fit but also feeling good.
TR: How do you manage your social media presence, and do you think it’s essential for models to have a strong online presence?
EJ: Absolutely. In today’s digital age, social media is often the first impression whether for a job or a modelling opportunity. People check your platforms. Social media is a digital portfolio. I treat my pages like a brand because you are your brand. I keep my content intentional, authentic, and professional. I post regularly, but everything aligns with who I am and the image I want to project. It has opened doors for collaborations and allowed me to connect with many people.
TR: Traveling is a significant part of a model’s life. How do you stay grounded and inspired while exploring new places?
EJ: Traveling is a creative inspiration. It allows me to see new places, experience different cultures, try new foods, and meet new people. I stay grounded by sticking to my routines and checking in with my family and friends often.
TR: You were part of Mister Teen 2023 SA. How did that experience shape your modelling career, and what advice would you give aspiring models?
EJ: Mister Teen 2023 SA was a great experience. It gave me a platform to grow. It taught me discipline, confidence, and how to carry myself professionally. My advice to aspiring models: be patient, stay authentic, and do not be afraid to start small or go big. Every experience builds you up. Take up space and just be you. That is how you learn and grow.
TR: What sets you apart from other models, and what unique qualities do you bring to a photoshoot or runway show?
EJ: I bring versatility and energy to every project. I add my own twist wherever I go. Whether it is high fashion, photoshoots, or pageantry, I adapt while staying true to who I am. I understand how to embody different moods, but I always aim to create a sense of connection with the clothes, the camera, and the audience.
TR: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or campaigns you are excited about, and what is next in your modelling career?
EJ: Yes! I currently have a few judging gigs lined up for various pageants. I am looking forward to joining a modelling agency, doing more castings, photoshoots, and runways. Looking ahead, I hope to work more on local, national, and international levels. I have already walked for local designers and brands like Markham and Ackermans at fashion shows and wedding expos. Since I was young, I have always dreamed of seeing myself in big store windows, brands like Mr Price, Markham, and others. I still carry that dream. I am also passionate about breaking the stigma around boys participating in pageants or modelling. Modelling is an art, it has helped me grow in confidence, discipline, public speaking, and leadership. I want to encourage more young men to embrace these opportunities without shame. I also plan to work with my former university through GVBF initiatives to address issues affecting students not just locally but globally.
TR: How do you balance your modelling work with personal life, and what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
EJ: I have learned to set boundaries and make time for myself outside of modelling. I balance academics with other interests like leadership roles or judging pageants. I enjoy hiking, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, or simply having “me time.” Those quiet moments recharge me and help me show up as my best self on set.
TR: What message do you hope to convey through your modelling, and how do you want to impact your audience?
EJ: My life motto is: Let the One who created you be the One who defines you. People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. If not you, then who? If not now, then when? Go out there, take up space, and build a future for yourself and for those still to come. I want to inspire others to embrace their individuality and chase their dreams. Be intentional and know that strength comes from being true to yourself. If I can help someone feel seen, heard, confident, or motivated in any way, then I know I have made an impact.
TR: Are there any skills or areas of interest you are looking to explore in your modelling career?
EJ: Most definitely. I am always looking to grow and evolve personally and professionally. Modelling is just the beginning. It is a doorway to many creative and purposeful paths. I want to use my platform to engage in advocacy and help break stigmas and stereotypes in the industry. The rest is still unfolding and I am excited to see what the future holds.
