President Duma Boko of Botswana has made history as the first African head of state to visit Estonia, marking a significant milestone in strengthening diplomatic and digital cooperation between the two nations. The state visit, which began on May 22, focuses on accelerating Botswana’s transformation into a digital economy.
Welcomed by Estonian President Alar Karis, President Boko emphasized the importance of learning from Estonia’s globally acclaimed digital transformation, particularly in e-governance, cybersecurity, and innovation.
“Our discussions focused on key areas where Botswana can learn from Estonia’s digital journey. Estonia offers valuable insights that can help us fast-track our ambitions and better serve our people,” said President Boko.
The visit included engagements with Estonian tech companies and institutions such as e-Estonia and Tallinn University of Technology. President Boko also visited Unicorn Squad, a program promoting STEM education among girls, which he called “a powerful example of how we can break barriers and empower the next generation of women in tech.”
Minister of Communication and Innovation, David Tshere, earlier confirmed that Botswana is prioritizing the shift toward a digital economy. President Boko’s visit reinforces this vision, signaling Botswana’s commitment to leveraging global best practices to enhance digital service delivery and economic innovation.
“These engagements represent practical opportunities that will shape how we roll out our digital agenda and create a Botswana that is inclusive, innovative, and future-ready,” said President Boko.
“Estonia’s digital expertise can support Botswana’s modernization & diversification. Let’s build new partnerships in innovation, business & knowledge. At the Estonia–Botswana Business Seminar, we saw great potential for cooperation. Estonia is open for business!” wrote Alar Karis, President of Estonia.
