The 72nd Miss World pageant officially kicked off in Hyderabad, India, with a spectacular opening ceremony on May 11 that celebrated global heritage, culture, and couture. Among the standout moments of the night were the breathtaking traditional costume displays from the African continent, sending a bold signal that Africa is ready to claim the coveted crown.

With over 110 countries represented at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, the African Queens lit up the stage with vibrant, symbolic attire that paid tribute to their homelands — from the oceans of Cameroon to the elephants of Botswana, and the ancestral wisdom of Ivory Coast to Nigeria’s cultural renaissance.

Miss Cameroon, Issie Princesse, wowed with a shimmering mermaid-style outfit that paid homage to the Atlantic Ocean. Her ensemble, adorned with sea stars, shells, and pearls, featured cascading turquoise drapes and a golden headpiece symbolising coral reefs and royal regalia.

Ivory Coast’s Fatoumata Coulibaly captivated with “The Guardian of Traditions,” an outfit inspired by the legendary Karaba the Sorceress. Her costume featured five handcrafted dolls representing the country’s major ethnic groups — a powerful tribute to heritage and unity.

Botswana’s Anicia Gaothusi brought the spirit of Africa’s majestic elephants to life in a costume representing wisdom, strength, and cultural pride. Her look was hailed as a strong statement of Botswana’s natural and historic legacy.

Nigeria’s Raimi Joy Mojisola donned a flowing costume titled “The Mother of Return Anew,” rooted in the grandeur of Cross River traditions. Holding a horsetail and fan — potent symbols of rhythm and culture — she embodied a continent coming full circle, with a map of Africa motif to reinforce unity.

Other African contestants who made fashion headlines included delegates from Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Lesotho, and South Sudan.

With such bold representation at the opening, many pageant observers believe the African contingent has signalled its serious intent to bring the Miss World crown home this year.
