A leopard cannot change its spots they say. Sir Peter Vowles is getting to know his new home in Nigeria one local experience at a time.

The former British ambassador to Zimbabwe, now serving in Nigeria, recently spent part of his weekend exploring the Balan Gambo Kilishi Market in Abuja.

It was not a formal diplomatic engagement. He was simply out exploring, tasting local treats and chatting with people along the way.

“A great weekend around Abuja, getting my bearings before I get started. Spent some time exploring the Balan Gambo Kilishi Market. Left with some outstanding kilishi, sesame brittle and sugar cane, and had some great conversations along the way,” Vowles wrote on Facebook.

The market is known for kilishi, a popular Nigerian dried meat snack associated with northern Nigeria and Hausa food traditions. However, the visit seemed to be about more than the food. The conversations and chance to experience everyday life offered a glimpse into his new surroundings.

People in Zimbabwe may remember a similar side of the diplomat during his time in the country.

Vowles took a keen interest in Zimbabwean culture, including learning to speak Shona and embracing local food and traditions.

Now, in Abuja, that same curiosity appears to be continuing.

Nigeria may still be new to him, but a weekend spent around kilishi sellers, local snacks and conversations with ordinary people is not a bad way to start finding his bearings.
