Kakanyetso Gabatsholwe is emerging as one of Botswana’s leading fashion voices, using her international experience to inspire and uplift the country’s next generation of models.
Originally from the village of Ngarange, Gabatsholwe began her modelling career in 2017 with Empire Modelling Agency before joining XModels under Latty Motlhalamme. Her rise saw her crowned Top Model Botswana 2017, followed by appearances at AFI Johannesburg Fashion Week, where she was later scouted by Isis Models Africa.
This year, she earned a nomination for Photogenic Model of the Year at the Africa Star Awards in Ghana, further cementing her growing international profile.
Despite global opportunities, Gabatsholwe remains committed to developing Botswana’s fashion industry. She believes better communication, wider access to auditions and stronger outreach in schools can help unlock modelling talent in both rural and urban communities.
“Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth,” she says. “I chose to inspire others and encourage them to pursue their goals.”
For Gabatsholwe, modern modelling extends beyond appearance, focusing instead on professionalism, confidence and brand alignment. She credits consistency, authenticity and listening to one’s agent as key to longevity in the industry.
She also acknowledged the support of Botswana’s Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development in creating opportunities for local talent.
“The secret weapons to staying in the game are confidence, being yourself and listening to your agent,” she says, encouraging young Batswana to pursue their ambitions fearlessly and with purpose.
