Zimbabwe joined the global commemoration of Europe Day with celebrations in Harare that underscored strengthening ties between Zimbabwe and the European Union across trade, culture and development cooperation.

Held on 8 May at the European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe, the event brought together diplomats, government officials and cultural figures to mark the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the foundation of the European Union.

EU Ambassador Katrin Hagemann and acting Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Shava reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement between Zimbabwe and the EU, with cooperation spanning agriculture, health, education and renewable energy.

Officials also highlighted growing economic ties, with Zimbabwe-EU trade now nearing US$1 billion, driven by exports including horticulture, tobacco and minerals, alongside European technology, machinery and pharmaceuticals entering the Zimbabwean market.

The celebrations drew ambassadors from several countries, political leaders including Nelson Chamisa, traditional leaders such as Chief Dakamela and cultural promoter Plot Mhako.

A standout moment came when Ambassador Hagemann played the mbira, earning applause from guests and highlighting the role of cultural exchange in strengthening international partnerships.

The event concluded with discussions focused on youth opportunities, education exchanges and climate cooperation, reflecting a shared commitment to deeper Zimbabwe-EU collaboration.
