SPOTLIGHT: Zimbabwe’s women’s football has entered a new chapter with the election of Chido Chizondo as Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL). Chizondo secured victory with 13 out of 16 votes cast, becoming both league chair and a member of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Executive Committee, a dual role that places her at the heart of shaping the future of the women’s game.

In her acceptance speech, Chizondo expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in her leadership and outlined her vision to transform women’s football into a more inclusive, competitive, and respected sport both locally and internationally. My vision is centered around building equity for the women’s game that will be transformational in improving the game locally and internationally, she said.

A seasoned public relations professional with over 12 years of experience, Chizondo brings a wealth of leadership to the position. She currently serves as PR executive at FC Platinum Holdings and sits on the board of CSR Network Zimbabwe, where she advocates for responsible and sustainable business practices.

Her leadership philosophy is rooted in talent development from grassroots to elite levels, with a strong emphasis on youth pathways, coaching excellence, and inclusivity. “This game belongs to us, and we must take ownership. Through unity and commitment, we can create an environment where every player has the opportunity to shine and realise their full potential,” she noted.

The Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League, established in 2012, has been the pinnacle platform for women’s football in Zimbabwe, inspiring young girls nationwide to pursue the sport. Outgoing chairperson Susan Chibizhe, who congratulated the new board, urged Chizondo and her team to focus on grassroots development, stakeholder engagement, and innovation to elevate the league further.

Reflecting on her mandate, Chizondo pledged to honor the foundation laid by the previous board while driving forward a new era marked by accountability, inclusivity, and empowerment. Our community is rich in talent and passion. We aspire not only to excel on the field but to empower our players off the field, equipping them with skills and confidence for success in all aspects of life,” she affirmed.

Her message was clear, women’s football in Zimbabwe is poised for growth, respect, and a stronger international presence. With her election, players, coaches, and fans alike are looking to a future where the ZWPSL gains the recognition and value it deserves.
