On Saturday, November 16th, Dominican Convent High School Harare hosted its first-ever Students in Media Seminar. The event, an initiative by the school’s media club, aimed to foster meaningful exchanges among students passionate about media. The seminar, packed with valuable lessons, was a groundbreaking occasion that brought together six schools: Arundel, St. Dominic’s Chishawasha, St. Ignatius College, St. John’s Emerald Hill, Prince Edward, and Dominican Convent itself.

A total of 55 students participated, engaging in discussions that explored the challenges faced by young media enthusiasts and brainstorming possible solutions.

Zimbabwe’s media industry faces significant financial challenges, making it less appealing to parents who often view it as an unconventional career path. The country has only four television stations available on DStv: ZBC, NRTV, 3KTV, and ZTN Prime. While radio has a broader impact and reach, television and print media have been overtaken by social media. Despite these challenges, schools like Dominican Convent are determined to change the narrative.

The school’s thriving media club is equipping students with practical skills in photography and videography, preparing them to be innovators in the evolving media landscape.

The seminar featured a special session with award-winning photojournalist Aaron Ufumeli. Ufumeli shared valuable insights on photography, teaching students practical skills and encouraging them to view media as a platform for entrepreneurship. His presentation inspired students to explore the potential career paths and opportunities available in the media industry.

The day’s events also included a photography competition and a media quiz, both of which kept students engaged and eager to excel. The gentlemen from St. Ignatius College stood out, showcasing thorough preparation during the media quiz.

The seminar underscored the importance of media in everyday life and its undeniable influence on society. By nurturing young talent through events like these, Dominican Convent High School is playing a pivotal role in preparing the next generation of media professionals.

As media continues to shape the world, it is vital to equip young minds with the skills and confidence to thrive in the field. The future of Zimbabwe’s media industry is bright, with passionate and innovative young people leading the way.
