Happymore Kamundaranga, popularly known as Mr. Shegu (SturdyMan), is a highly talented Zimbabwean dancehall musician. He has released several songs, with “Musikana Arikufara” being his most popular.

My Afrika Magazine reporter, Charmaine Brown (CB) had an exclusive moment with Mr Shegu (HK) to learn more about his musical background and upcoming plans in the music arena.

CB: Can you introduce yourself to My Afrika Magazine readers?

HM: My name is Happymore Kamundaranga, but most people call me Mr. Shegu. I was born in Zimbabwe and I live in Glenview 1, Harare. I am passionate about creating and performing music that truly connects with people on an emotional level.

CB: Why did you venture into music?

HK: Music has always been a part of me. No matter where you see me, I am usually singing. Interestingly, when I was young, I received a prophecy from Prophetess Muzopa. She said, “This boy is going to be a singer. Many people will know and love him.” At that time, I could not even write songs!

CB:  What inspires your music and your songs? What stories do they tell?

HK: My music and songs are inspired by a variety of experiences, emotions, and observations from the world around me. What inspires me the most is what we go through. What I see especially in women is Gender-based violence. My heart hurts seeing a woman cry. Maybe it is because I was only raised by my mom.

CB: The song ‘Musikana Arikufara’ was a hit song, what motivated you to write that song.

HK:  For ‘Musika Arikufara,’ I drew inspiration from a previous song I released, ‘Shegu.’ ‘Shegu’ addressed the issue of boys not buying presents, and it resonated particularly well with female fans. Wanting to return the favor, I wrote ‘Musika Arikufara,’ which was also well-received.

CB: What skills have you learned that will help you in your singing career?

HK: One of my helpful skills is listening to other artists without critiquing their music. This benefits me by sparking ideas for my own songs. Additionally, I have learned that developing a strong stage presence is key to engaging audiences and creating memorable performances.

CB: What is your dream, collaborating with any artist in Zimbabwe or International?

HK: One day, I dream of collaborating on a song with Shashl, my favorite artist. Internationally, I’d love to work with Nigerian artist Fireboy DML.

CB: Do you face any challenges as an artist in the music arena?

HK: Basically, what I thought were challenges turned out not to be; those experiences pushed my music and gave me hope and strength to believe in myself.

CB: Last but not least, any message to share with your fans as well as those who wish to join the Hip Hop sector?

HK: Finally, for those who dream of singing, just go for it! Remember the saying: “Nothing stops a child who starts crawling, and eventually walks.” The same goes for you, nothing will stop you from pursuing your dreams. To all my fans, please continue to support me. You can reach out to me on social media through this handle @mr_shegu_sturdyman. Thank you very much!!
