The 25th European Film Festival has officially commenced in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone in cultural exchange between Europe and Ethiopia. This year’s edition is particularly notable as it coincides with 50 years of diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and the European Union (EU) and 25 years of partnership between the EU and the African Union (AU).

Celebrating the power of cinema to bridge cultures, the festival underscores the enduring relationship between Europe and Ethiopia. At the opening ceremony, Biruk Feleke, Press and Information Officer of the EU in Africa, highlighted the festival’s impact:

“This milestone event not only showcases European films but also features works that explore and appreciate Ethiopia’s rich culture and heritage.”

This year’s festival presents a curated selection of 27 award-winning European films alongside two Ethiopian productions. The lineup spans various genres, including drama, comedy, romance, and documentary. Some notable films include; “20 Days in Mariupol” (Ukraine) – An Oscar-winning documentary capturing the harrowing siege of Mariupol during the Russian invasion. “Bigman” (Netherlands) – A heartwarming drama about a young boy’s dream of becoming a professional soccer player. “Mermaids Don’t Cry” (Austria) – A romantic drama exploring love and relationships. “The Land of Short Sentences” (Denmark) – A thought-provoking take on social media’s impact on modern life.

Beyond film screenings, the festival offers workshops and masterclasses led by industry professionals, covering topics such as; Screenwriting & Storytelling, Film Direction & Production, Cinematography & Editing, Marketing & Distribution.

Attendees can also enjoy Q&A sessions with filmmakers, providing an intimate look into the creative process. Adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, live performances will take place throughout the event.

All screenings are free and open to the public, with complimentary parking and refreshments, making it an accessible and enjoyable outing for all.
