Zimbabwe’s hopes of pulling off a sensational upset against Afghanistan ended in heartbreak as they fell just 10 runs short of a record-breaking victory. The hosts were bowled out for 201 on the final delivery, chasing Afghanistan’s imposing total of 203 for five.

Ryan Burl’s explosive 37 off 15 balls, featuring five towering sixes, gave Zimbabwe a fighting chance, but his dismissal in the 16th over proved decisive. Despite a late surge from Wesley Musekiwa (28), Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Ahmadzai’s three for 42, held firm to secure the win.

Earlier, Zimbabwe’s chase began on shaky ground, losing three wickets for 104 runs in the 11th over. Sean Bennett’s composed 47 off 31 balls steadied the innings, but consistent breakthroughs from the visitors kept Zimbabwe under pressure.

The defeat marks another near-miss for Zimbabwe, whose previous highest successful T20I run-chase came against Namibia in Windhoek in October 2023, when they chased down 200 for five off the final ball.

Though the record slipped through their fingers this time, Zimbabwe’s spirited performance and attacking intent left fans hopeful for what lies ahead in their T20 journey.
