Zimbabwe is set to make history as the first African country to host the Annual Gathering of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) in 2026. Deputy Minister of Sports, Hon. Jesaya, announced the milestone on her social media platforms, calling it a testament to Zimbabwe’s growing status as a global cultural and creative hub.

“Zimbabwe invites you to CIMAM Annual Conference 2026 as an opportunity to exchange and network in the African soil for the first time. Its an opportunity for the international museum ecosystem to understand African art and museum practise in its own context.” said Raphael Chikukwa, Executive Director, National Gallery of Zimbabwe

The conference, scheduled for 20–22 November 2026 in Harare, will bring together curators, museum leaders, and art professionals from around the world. Hon. Jesaya thanked the Zimbabwean delegation for securing the bid and expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for supporting the country’s cultural industries.

“This is a proud moment for Zimbabwe,” she said. “Hosting CIMAM will showcase our rich heritage and open new doors for collaboration and growth in the art sector.”

The event is expected to boost cultural exchange and spotlight Zimbabwe’s vibrant arts scene, warm hospitality, and unique attractions. The official announcement was made on June 24, 2025, in Barcelona at an event hosted at the residence of collector Han Nefkens, Founder of Han Nefkens Foundation.
