The Zimbabwe Rugby Union has announced a 40-man squad selected by Head Coach Pieter Benade for the upcoming Zambezi Series, where the Sables will take on regional rivals Zambia and Botswana this May.

This year’s series will spotlight local talent, with all players based in Zimbabwe and ready to carry the national flag proudly in front of home fans.

The campaign kicks off on 4 May when Zimbabwe faces Zambia at Harare Sports Club, followed by a clash against Botswana on 10 May, also in Harare.

Adding star power to the fixtures, multi-award-winning artists Bryan K and Gemma Griffiths will perform the national anthem in a special duet to mark the symbolic start of Zimbabwe’s international rugby season.

We took a short break from November last year after the international window, and we’re back at work in January,” said Team Manager Takunda Chifokoyo.

“You can tell just from the commitment and work ethic that the boys want this more than ever. Our locally based players have been working together and some great combinations have formed. We are pretty excited about Zambia and Botswana. The Battle of the Zambezi won’t have a dull moment—this is our showcase to local fans, and we thrive off their support.”

The series comes at a crucial time for Zimbabwe Rugby, as the Sables aim to defend their Rugby Africa Cup title later this year in Uganda. The 2025 edition also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with only the tournament winner securing direct qualification.

Among the rising leaders in the squad is Dion Khumalo, the dynamic midfielder named one of the vice-captains. Khumalo’s rise from the 2023 Under-20 setup to the senior leadership team highlights the success of Zimbabwe’s rugby development pathway.

As preparations intensify, all eyes will be on the Sables to build momentum, showcase squad depth, and ignite fan support across Zimbabwe.
