Lusaka, Zambia – The nation is mourning the loss of Former First Lady Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, who passed away on August 13th, at Maina Soko Medical Centre after a short illness. The sad news was confirmed by the Mwanawasa and Kakubo families in a statement released by Hon. Stanley K. Kakubo, MP, who serves as the family spokesperson.

Mrs. Mwanawasa, who was deeply respected and beloved, served as the First Lady during the presidency of her late husband, Levy Mwanawasa, and was known for her contributions to social and community issues in Zambia. The funeral gathering is being held at her residence in Roma Park, with further details to be communicated in due course.

President Hakainde Hichilema also expressed his condolences and visited the Mwanawasa family home to offer support during this difficult time. In his statement, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of unity and faith for the family, especially the children, some of whom have tragically lost both parents. “May the soul of our former First Lady rest in eternal peace,” he wrote.

The passing of Mrs. Mwanawasa has brought an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the nation, reflecting her significant impact on Zambia during and after her tenure as First Lady.
