The Oscar-winning actor’s latest film brings an international cast to New South Wales, with significant investment in Australia’s screen industry and a worldwide Prime Video release planned.
Hollywood actor Will Smith has completed filming of Supermax, an upcoming American action crime thriller produced by Miramax, The Picture Company and Westbrook Studios, with Amazon MGM Studios handling worldwide distribution.
Production commenced in New South Wales on 24 August 2026, with filming predominantly taking place in Sydney and additional scenes shot around Lake Macquarie.
Although reports citing a production crew member indicate that principal photography concluded on 10 October, Smith publicly celebrated the film’s completion on 28 October, sharing behind-the-scenes photographs and thanking Sydney for its hospitality.
Inside Supermax: Directed by David Gordon Green, Supermax follows two FBI agents investigating a seemingly impossible murder inside an impenetrable maximum-security prison.
Smith portrays Rex, one of the investigating agents, alongside AnnaSophia Robb, who plays his fellow FBI investigator.
The film features an international ensemble including Australian actor Jason Clarke, Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo, Jaafar Jackson, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Andrés Almeida, Martin Bats Bradford and Erika Ringor.
Among the notable additions is Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson and nephew of the late Michael Jackson. His portrayal of the legendary entertainer in the 2026 biographical film Michael introduced him to a wider cinema audience.
Supermax represents another significant step in Jackson’s developing acting career, placing him alongside one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Jackson described the experience of filming overseas positively and praised his collaboration with Smith.
The cast also includes Martin Bats Bradford, known for his appearance in Hit Man, and Erika Ringor, who previously worked with Smith on King Richard. Ringor’s heritage includes African American and Filipino ancestry.
Their participation adds to the representation of Black performers within the film’s international ensemble.
A Major Investment in Australia’s Film Industry: Beyond its international cast, Supermax represents a significant investment in Australia’s screen production sector.
According to Screen NSW, the project was expected to generate more than A$53 million in local expenditure and create approximately 290 jobs.
The production received support from the NSW Government through its Made in NSW Fund, an initiative supporting major film and television productions in the state.
The screenplay was written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, with Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company producing alongside Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios.
The project adds to a growing list of major international productions choosing Australia for filming, reinforcing the country’s position within the global entertainment industry.
A Film Set for International Audiences: In May 2026, Amazon MGM Studios acquired worldwide distribution rights to Supermax from Miramax in a deal reportedly valued at approximately US$70 million.
The film is expected to stream on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories, providing an extensive international audience for the production.
Although some entertainment industry reports have suggested 15 October 2027 as a possible release date, Amazon MGM Studios has not officially confirmed a premiere date.
For audiences interested in Black cinema and international filmmaking, the collaboration between Smith and Jackson is among the project’s most notable developments.
Their participation reflects two different stages of an acting career: Smith’s decades of international success and Jackson’s emergence as a performer establishing his own identity beyond his family’s musical legacy.
For Australia, Supermax demonstrates the economic significance and international reach of major film productions. With filming completed in New South Wales, attention now turns to the film’s anticipated worldwide release on Prime Video, although an official premiere date has yet to be announced.
