Rising Hip-Hop artist Sensei Kenrul was born in 1999 and named Tichaona Pride Mavhunga. He is an artist whose music is grounded in faith and also infuses motivational messages, giving his take on Zim Hip-Hop a unique flare.
The talented rapper grew up listening to Hip-Hop music and was inspired by the musicality and poetry that was behind the music. He cites Winky D, Holy 10, Bagga, Takura, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Roddy Rich as inspirations to his artistry. He recorded his first song back in 2017 titled “Lost Free styling” to an Eminem beat which was well received by his fellow class mates. “My first experience at the mic wasn’t as good as there was a bit of doubt and lack of confidence” he shared with us. Cleary he has outgrown his early feelings of doubt. When watching videos such as “Munhu Unoyera” a song about inner strength and overcoming in times of adversity produced by famed producer Nyasha Timbe, Sensei Kenrul shows a cool confidence as he delivers his lines and performs in the music video.
Other stand out singles from the musician include “Mapisarema 23” which is a thanksgiving song to the divine for providence and the support of the divine. The music video shows him with bandages on his arms. The music video’s gentle direction and artistry is a truly stirring experience for viewers. The single “Hwai Yadzoka Mudanga” alludes to the scripture of the sheep that has gone astray.
The crooner has also highlighted the difficulty in forging a fan base in the music industry and how crowded it has become. “The industry has a lot of artists now so it’s more like a popularity contest that makes it fun if you look at it because we [are] all looking for attention from the same pool of fans.” Apart from his music, Kenrul is also an entrepreneur and a business minded person.
