Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running was on full display at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, with Ruth Chepngetich and John Korir taking top honors in both the women’s and men’s races, respectively. President William Samoei Ruto lauded the athletes in a statement, praising their historic achievements and highlighting the nation’s pride in their success.
Chepngetich made history by becoming the first woman ever to break the 2:10:00 barrier, setting a new world record in the women’s race. Irine Cheptai also secured a bronze, adding to Kenya’s impressive medal tally. In the men’s race, John Korir clinched the gold, while Amos Kipruto brought home the bronze.
President Ruto’s message celebrated the runners for “flying the Kenyan flag high” on the global stage and acknowledged their stellar performances at one of the world’s most prestigious marathon events.
