President Cyril Ramaphosa will participate in the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Final Results Announcement Ceremony for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. The event will take place tomorrow, Sunday, 02 June 2024, at 17:20 at the National Results Operations Centre located at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.
South Africans cast their votes on Wednesday, 29 May 2024, in what marks the seventh democratic National and Provincial elections since the establishment of universal suffrage in the country. These elections were preceded by special voting days on 27 and 28 May 2024, allowing for early voting under specific circumstances.
The 2024 elections are particularly notable for the implementation of the Electoral Amendment Act, which became law in June 2023. This Act expanded the eligibility criteria for candidates, allowing independent candidates to contest in the National and Provincial Elections for the first time, thus broadening the democratic landscape.
As part of the results ceremony, President Ramaphosa is expected to deliver an address, reflecting on the significance of these elections and their outcomes.
The announcement ceremony represents a pivotal moment in South Africa’s democratic process, signifying the culmination of a rigorous and inclusive electoral period. The presence of President Ramaphosa underscores the importance of this democratic exercise and the continuous efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral integrity.
This announcement has been issued by the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.
