Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President and retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away today at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom. His death was confirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a solemn national address that paid tribute to a man he described as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman.”
President Buhari’s life was marked by two defining chapters of leadership, first as a military ruler from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Known for his stoic discipline, anti-corruption crusade, and deep-rooted belief in Nigeria’s potential, Buhari leaves behind a legacy of integrity and nation-first governance.
“He stood firm through the most turbulent times,” President Tinubu said in his statement, “leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
In honour of his memory and contributions, President Tinubu announced seven days of national mourning, with all national flags flying at half-staff. A special Federal Executive Council session will be held on Tuesday, dedicated to celebrating the life and service of the late President. The government also confirmed that full state honours will be accorded to Buhari.
Condolences poured in from across the country and around the world. President Tinubu extended heartfelt sympathies to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, the people of Daura Emirate, and the entire Katsina State, which Buhari called home.
Buhari’s leadership style, rooted in personal discipline, national unity, and public accountability, left a lasting mark on Nigerian governance. During his presidency, he prioritized infrastructural development, the war against insurgency, and a bold stance against corruption.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” President Tinubu prayed, urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from Buhari’s life of selfless service.
As the nation mourns one of its most iconic figures, the former president’s legacy continues to echo across the corridors of power and in the hearts of millions of Nigerians.
