Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as the President of Namibia on 21 March 2025, becoming the country’s first female head of state. The inauguration coincided with Namibia’s 35th anniversary of independence, symbolically intertwining the nation’s past struggles with a forward-looking leadership agenda.

Nandi-Ndaitwah succeeds President Nangolo Mbumba, who had held office on an interim basis following the passing of President Hage Geingob in 2024. Her ascension to office is historically noteworthy not only for its gender milestone but also for reaffirming the continuity of leadership within the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), Namibia’s ruling party since independence.

Her victory in the 2024 presidential election, where she secured 57 percent of the vote, underscored broad-based national support for her leadership. Addressing the nation during the inauguration in Windhoek, Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed a vision for unity, development, and the consolidation of democratic gains. “The task facing me, as the fifth president of the Republic of Namibia, is to preserve the gains of our independence on all fronts and to ensure that the unfinished agenda of economic and social advancement of our people is carried forward with vigour and determination to bring about shared balanced prosperity for all,” she declared.

International and regional dignitaries, including several African heads of state and representatives from global institutions, were present at the inauguration ceremony. Their attendance reflected Namibia’s growing diplomatic significance in southern Africa and the continent more broadly.

A veteran of the liberation struggle and a seasoned political figure, Nandi-Ndaitwah has been an integral part of Namibia’s governance since 1990. Her political career spans decades, beginning with her election to the National Assembly during the first democratic elections. Over the years, she has held a series of senior cabinet positions, including Minister of Women Affairs and Child Welfare, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Minister of Environment and Tourism, and most recently, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

In February 2024, she was appointed as Namibia’s first female Vice President, reinforcing her stature as a trailblazer for women in leadership within the region. Her political journey mirrors Namibia’s transition from colonial rule to democratic governance and aligns with broader continental shifts towards inclusivity in leadership.

As she begins her presidency, the expectations are high for transformative leadership that can deliver economic renewal, uphold democratic values, and foster social cohesion. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s emphasis on national unity and collective ambition sets a tone of pragmatic optimism. “We must work together as a united people with one heart and one mind,” she urged during her inaugural speech.
