The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has launched a short film grant aimed at supporting local filmmakers and fostering the growth of the country’s film industry. This initiative aligns with the Zimbabwe Film Strategy and is made possible through financial backing from the Lotteries and Gaming Board.
Announcing the grant, NACZ Board Chair, Dr. Jacqueline Nozipo Maraire, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to strengthening the film sector. She emphasized that the grant is a testament to ongoing efforts to develop Zimbabwe’s creative economy and create opportunities for filmmakers.
“The launch of this grant is evidence that there is continuous work to enforce the pillars outlined in the Zimbabwe Film Strategy,” she said.
The grant, which offers up to USD 2,000 per selected project, will fund the production of three short films that reflect Zimbabwean narratives. These films will be showcased at national and international festivals, creating a repository of local content.
Renowned filmmaker Ben Mahaka welcomed the initiative, noting that capacitating the film sector is crucial to growing Zimbabwe’s creative exports.
Applicants must demonstrate filmmaking experience, access to production equipment, and membership in a recognized film association. Female filmmakers are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applications close on April 14, 2025, and submissions should be sent to the NACZ offices or via email at natartsziminfo@gmail.com.
