The Ambassador of France to Zimbabwe, Paul Bertrand Barets, met this week with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, to review the positive momentum shaping bilateral relations between the two nations.

Held in a spirit of mutual respect, the meeting highlighted growing cooperation across economic, cultural, educational and scientific sectors, laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration ahead.

Both sides welcomed the active presence of French companies in Zimbabwe and discussed new partnership opportunities. Ambassador Barets noted strong interest from French investors, while Minister Murwira encouraged Zimbabwean entrepreneurs to explore the French market — now the EU’s leading destination for foreign investment, according to Ernst & Young.

Discussions also spotlighted ongoing initiatives, including strengthened scientific collaboration on biodiversity and human-wildlife coexistence. A key example is the newly opened biomolecular laboratory at the University of Zimbabwe, supported by French expertise and set to become a centre for research and innovation.

Cultural cooperation is also advancing, particularly through the upcoming visitor centre at Great Zimbabwe, funded by France and scheduled for completion in 2026. The project aims to highlight Zimbabwe’s rich heritage and support educational outreach.

Regionally, the meeting touched on Zimbabwe’s leadership within SADC and opportunities for broader cooperation. France reaffirmed its support ahead of the “Africa Forward” summit, co-organised with Kenya and set for May 2026, where Zimbabwe is expected to play a key role.

The visit underscored a shared commitment to stronger political dialogue, expanding economic ties, and advancing cultural and scientific partnerships. Both countries expressed optimism for a future of mutual benefit and deeper Franco-Zimbabwean cooperation.
