Atenda Antia Chinx, professionally known as Atenda Chinx, is a rising 19-year-old Zimbabwean singer and songwriter with deep roots in the country’s musical heritage. Inspired by her late father, the legendary Comrade Chinx (Dickson Chingaira), Atenda discovered her passion for music in Grade 3, nurtured by her father’s nightly gospel hymn sessions.
Her unique style blends soulful melodies with themes of love and heartbreak, aiming to create music that resonates deeply with listeners.
At just 15, Atenda joined Zero53 Music to develop her musical talent further. She has since released her debut single, “Cool Me Down,” followed by a new track titled “Lockdown.” Her unique style pays homage to her father’s legacy, continuing the family’s musical tradition.
Comrade Chinx was a prominent figure in Zimbabwean music, known for his work with the band Ilanga alongside icons like Don Gumbo, Busi Ncube, and Andy Brown. Despite being offered the opportunity to study medicine abroad, he chose to pursue music and became a celebrated voice of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. His hits, including “Ngorimba,” “Vanhu Vose VemuAfrica,” and the iconic “Roger Confirm,” have left an indelible mark on Zimbabwean culture.
Since the 1980s, Comrade Chinx’s liberation songs have been a staple on Zimbabwean radio, particularly during national holidays such as Heroes Day and Independence Day. After his passing on June 16, 2017, he was rightfully honored as a liberation war hero. Now, Atenda Chinx is carrying forward his legacy, infusing her own voice into Zimbabwe’s rich musical tapestry.
