EXCLUSIVE: Meet Richard Chikwe (RC), a fitness trailblazer and founder of Garage Body Fitness, on a mission to transform lives across Zimbabwe. As a fitness trainer and bodybuilder, Richard is passionate about empowering individuals to unlock their potential and achieve their health goals.
Through his innovative programs, including the popular December Body Challenge, he’s redefining what fitness means for everyday people. He spoke with My Afrika Magazine’s senior reporter, Tapiwa Rubaya (TR).
TR: How did you get into fitness training and bodybuilding, and what motivates you to continue in this field?
RC: My fitness journey began with a childhood dream, to rock a six-pack! What started as a personal goal evolved into a God-given passion and, eventually, a purpose-driven career. I’m the founder of Garage Body Fitness, and as a trainer, I’m fueled by helping others unlock their potential and transform their lives.
TR: What makes the December Body Challenge unique compared to other fitness programs, and what results can participants expect?
RC: Get ready to crush your fitness goals with the December Body Challenge! This transformative experience is designed to help you close the year with confidence, energy, and a sculpted physique. Expect results, accountability, and a supportive community that will keep you motivated and driven.
TR: Who are some of your major clientele, and how do you tailor your training programs to meet their specific needs?
RC: From the disabled and elderly to busy professionals, elite athletes, and even kids, my clientele is diverse and dynamic. That’s why I tailor each program to fit individual goals, lifestyles, and challenges. My approach is simple: empower, educate, and transform.
TR: You emphasize that fitness is a state of mind. How do you help your clients develop a winning mindset and maintain motivation?
RC: At Garage Body Fitness, we don’t just build bodies, we build winners. Our supportive community fosters motivation, growth, and resilience. Through positive self-talk, goal-setting, and mutual support, we help clients develop a winning mindset that extends far beyond the gym.
TR: How do you incorporate nutrition and meal planning into your training programs, and what advice do you give to clients on healthy eating?
RC: Nutrition is the unsung hero of fitness. That’s why we provide personalized meal plans aligned with each client’s body goals. Our focus is on whole foods, balanced macronutrients, and mindful eating habits that fuel transformation and sustain results.
TR: What role do local athletic races and events play in your training philosophy, and how do you encourage clients to participate?
RC: Local events like marathons and sports festivals are more than just a finish line, they’re a starting point. I encourage clients to take part by setting realistic goals, providing training support, and celebrating every milestone. It’s time to take fitness to the streets!
TR: Can you share a success story of a client who transformed their physique and lifestyle through your program?
RC: Meet some of my clients who dropped over 20kg and gained a new lease on life! Their transformations are a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and our program’s effectiveness. We’re proud to be part of their journey, and we can’t wait to share more success stories.
TR: How do you balance your work as a fitness trainer with your own training and modeling career?
RC: Balance is key to success, both in and out of the gym. As a trainer and model, I prioritize self-care, schedule management, and aligning my goals to ensure I’m always performing at my best.
TR: What wise words do you have for Africa?
RC: “Cheap is expensive.” That’s what I always tell people, hire a qualified and certified professional. Don’t rush to where there’s a cheap service, especially when it comes to a lifestyle routine. Otherwise, you’ll live to regret it. Don’t let common mistakes derail your fitness journey! Unrealistic expectations, poor nutrition, and lack of consistency are pitfalls to avoid. Set SMART goals, seek professional guidance, and focus on sustainable progress.
TR: What can we expect from you in the coming months and year?
RC: Get ready for the next level! In 2026, we’ll launch expanded online coaching programs and workshops to help more people achieve their fitness goals. We’re also taking our message of wellness to companies, churches, hospitals, and schools, spreading the gospel of fitness. This year’s greatest achievement has been witnessing clients transform their lives and reach new heights of wellness.
