Gabon has officially rejoined the African Union (AU), marking a historic moment of renewed legitimacy, continental inclusion, and democratic transition following months of political restructuring. The announcement, celebrated by both national leaders and African Union officials, signals the end of Gabon’s suspension from the continental body and the beginning of a new era of stability and constitutional governance.
“Today I feel a deep sense of pride. Gabon has just rejoined the African Union,” said President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema in a heartfelt message. “This return is much more than a symbol: it is recognition of our collective commitment to rebuilding our country in peace, order, and dignity. Thank you all.”
The return follows Gabon’s peaceful transition back to constitutional order after political upheaval in 2023 led to its suspension from the AU. The process of reinstatement has included inclusive national dialogue, a successful constitutional referendum, and recently held credible democratic elections—efforts which were observed and endorsed by the AU.
In Addis Ababa, the AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed Gabonese Foreign Affairs Minister H.E. Régis Onanga Ndiaye and commended the nation’s progress.
The AU’s Peace and Security Council officially lifted Gabon’s suspension, affirming the country’s vital role in continental governance and AU institutions. As Gabon resumes its place among African nations, its return offers a renewed sense of purpose for continental diplomacy and governance.
