In an era where African fashion is increasingly commanding global attention, few brands are telling the continent’s story with as much authenticity and purpose as Ivhu Tribe. Fresh from a captivating solo showcase themed “Son of the Soil,” the brand delivered more than just garments on a runway—it presented a living narrative of ancestry, sustainability, identity, and pride.
Rooted in African heritage yet boldly contemporary, Ivhu Tribe continues to challenge perceptions of what African fashion can be. My Afrika Magazine reporter Tapiwa Rubaya (TR) sat down with the creative force behind the brand to discuss the inspiration behind the showcase, the unforgettable moments backstage, and the ambitious dreams driving Ivhu Tribe onto the global stage.
TR: What part of your African roots inspired the “Son of the Soil” theme most for this showcase?
IT: The “Son of the Soil” theme was deeply inspired by our connection to the land—our ancestry, our stories, and the resilience embedded in African identity. It reflects the beauty of being grounded in where we come from and honouring that through fashion that feels both ancestral and contemporary.
TR: What’s one sustainable material or technique from this collection that surprised people the most?
IT: One of the most surprising elements for many people was our use of raw, earth-inspired textures and repurposed materials. Seeing organic elements transformed into high-fashion silhouettes really challenged expectations of what sustainable African fashion can look like.
TR: What was the feeling backstage right before the models hit the runway this past weekend?
IT: Backstage was electric—there was a mix of nerves, excitement, and great pride. It felt like a sacred moment, almost spiritual. Everyone understood that we weren’t just putting on a show; we were telling a story that mattered.
TR: Which piece from the Ivhu Tribe collection felt the most “you” when you saw it come alive on stage?
IT: The highlight of the night for me was the “Son of the Soil” unraveling piece, brought to life by Charlotte, who embodied the role of a model statue throughout the showcase. That piece was incredibly personal—I created it using hosho baobab material and a blend of raw, organic elements. Watching it unravel on stage felt symbolic, like revealing layers of identity, history, and connection to the land. It wasn’t just a garment—it was a living expression of everything Ivhu Tribe stands for.
TR: If you had to describe the Ivhu Tribe aesthetic in three words to someone who missed the show, what would they be?
IT: Rooted. Bold. Intentional.
TR: What was the moment during the showcase when you heard the crowd react the loudest?
IT: The loudest reaction came during one of the statement pieces that fully captured the essence of “Son of the Soil.” It was dramatic, unapologetic, and deeply African. You could feel the audience connect with it instantly.
TR: What’s one way someone can style an Ivhu Tribe piece in their everyday life, not just on the runway?
IT:An Ivhu Tribe piece can be styled effortlessly into everyday life by pairing it with simple, modern basics—like denim or neutral tones—allowing the piece itself to remain the focal point while still feeling wearable and authentic.
TR: After pulling off a solo showcase, what’s one dream you have for Ivhu Tribe this year?
IT: After successfully executing a solo showcase, my dream for Ivhu Tribe this year is to take the brand onto international platforms—sharing our story globally while staying true to our roots. I want Ivhu Tribe to be part of the larger conversation about African fashion, sustainability, and identity.
