The 24th edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) will make history by introducing two new categories, Outstanding Male Fashion Designer and Outstanding Female Fashion Designer, marking the first time Zimbabwe’s fashion creators are formally recognised at the prestigious event.
For years, local designers, stylists, and costume makers have voiced concerns about being overlooked, despite their vital role in shaping the country’s creative and cultural identity. From dressing musicians and models to designing costumes for theatre and film, their work has long been a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s arts scene.
The inclusion of fashion at the NAMAs acknowledges fashion as an art form and celebrates the talent, innovation, and dedication of Zimbabwe’s designers. Nominations are now open on the NAMA website until November 30, with this year’s awards featuring 44 categories across various artistic disciplines.
While some industry voices have called for clearer selection criteria to ensure fair representation across diverse fashion sectors, many see this as a major step forward for Zimbabwean fashion, and a powerful affirmation of its place within the nation’s creative economy.
