Being famous can be incredibly challenging, especially for women who face societal pressures and scrutiny. If you’re a woman with a failed marriage, no children, or are considered “old” by societal standards, your every experience and statement can be turned against you. Criticism often comes not just from men, but also from other women. Even a simple request can be twisted and used as an attack.
Nigerian radio personality and television host Toke Makinwa has been a frequent target of such attacks. Her marital status and lack of children are constantly brought up on social media, with some going so far as to blame her for not being able to “keep a man,” despite the fact that it was her ex-husband who cheated.
Women in their late 30s, particularly those who take good care of themselves, often face harsh judgment from others who may be unhappy in their own lives. For instance, South African actress and model Lerato Kganyago, who got married in her late 30s, has been ridiculed for her fertility struggles. A different point of view is often met with hostility, leading to accusations and hurtful comments.
Women are sometimes accused of having abortions or being reckless, as a way to explain why they can’t conceive. Despite knowing the emotional and physical toll these challenges can take, others will still use them as a weapon to question your mental and emotional stability. For some, winning an argument or fighting dirty seems more important than empathy and support.
