In our new Sunday feature celebrating inspiring Africans, we’re proud to spotlight Brenda Matanga, a highly respected intellectual property (IP) law specialist and Head of Practice in Zimbabwe. With a remarkable academic foundation, a Bachelor of Law Honours (LLB) from the University of Zimbabwe and a Master’s in Intellectual Property Law (LLM) from the University of Turin, Italy, in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Brenda has made her mark as an expert in IP acquisition, prosecution, strategy, and dispute resolution.
Over the years, she has distinguished herself in the legal world, advising global companies and empowering start-ups with tailored IP services. Brenda is a force in legislative reform, currently serving as the Chairperson of the Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) Working Group, where she leads initiatives to modernize legal instruments affecting IP laws across Africa. As a former President of the Zimbabwe Institute of Patents and Trademarks Agents (ZIPTA) and now a Councillor of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, she advocates tirelessly for a robust IP framework.
In addition to her regional influence, Brenda is a member of the International Trademarks Association (INTA), where she previously served on the “Unreal Campaign” and now contributes to the Brands for a Better Society committee. Internationally recognized for her contributions, Brenda has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Most Influential Woman in IP (Zimbabwe) award in 2018 and the Top 50 Emerging IP Players award in 2019.
