Tendai Biti, former Finance minister and co-vice-president of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has announced his departure from the main opposition party. Biti cited a need for a break from politics to embark on a period of introspection and exploration of alternative avenues to challenge the ruling Zanu PF party.

In an interview on HSTV’s #FreeTalk show, Biti clarified that he had withdrawn from politics to redirect his focus towards endeavors beyond the political realm, aiming to contribute to efforts aimed at removing Zanu PF from power.

Disputing claims made by CCC spokesperson Jacob Mafume regarding a meeting that supposedly appointed him, Welshman Ncube, and Lynette Kairenyi Kore as rotational leaders of the party, Biti emphasized his decision to step back from such roles.

Rejecting accusations of betrayal and collusion with Zanu PF, Biti affirmed his commitment to various other pursuits, including legal work, strategic litigation, and writing projects. He revealed plans to publish a book dissecting liberation movements by the year’s end.

Despite his temporary withdrawal, Biti reiterated his dedication to the pursuit of democratic change in Zimbabwe. He called on citizens to reclaim agency and urgency in demanding accountability from the government, emphasizing the need for collective action beyond individual or party affiliations.

Biti’s announcement comes amidst efforts by CCC leader Welshman Ncube to strengthen the opposition and foster unity within the party following Nelson Chamisa’s departure. However, Biti’s resignation has been perceived differently by factions within the CCC, with some viewing it as a validation of their stance.

Looking ahead, Biti expressed his intent to re-engage in political activism before Zimbabwe’s next general elections in 2028, signaling his enduring commitment to the country’s democratic future.

The interview with Biti will be aired on HSTV’s YouTube channel.
